Case Study: RGF Redevelopment
Danvers, Massachusetts
The Challenge
Danvers had a biofouling problem due to iron and manganese bacteria with their ABW filtration system.
Replacing the media did not solve the entire issue because it was the underdrains that were fouled.
The backwash wasn't robust enough and there is no air scour in this system to break free all of that biofilm that was occurring inside the 3/4-inch-thick porous underdrain plating.
The Solution & Results
The media in the filter was due for replacement so while the media was out a Pantonite process was employed for the underdrains.
This process was applied after previous attempts by the utility using high pH, low pH, and hypo that had not worked.
In the words of the Utility Manager, Jason McCarthy, "you guys said you could do it, and you did... and it has been wonderful".
This process has now been repeated at Danvers for 3 of their filters.
