New Filter Media Won’t Fix a Blocked Underdrain

Why the visible signs may not reveal the underlying cause

When rapid gravity filter performance declines, the media often receives the blame first. It is the most visible part of the filter during routine operation, so clogging, mud-balling and deterioration are relatively easy to identify.

But an RGF is much more than its media.

Beneath the filter bed media and support gravel, the underdrain system is responsible for distributing backwash water and air across the filter. Their condition can have a major influence on how effectively the media is cleaned and how reliably the complete filter performs during normal operations.

When the problem begins beneath the media

Underdrains can become progressively restricted by biological growth, mineral deposits and accumulated material. As those restrictions develop, backwash flow may become reduced or uneven across the filter bed.

The media is then no longer rinsed effectively. Material captured during normal filtration remains within the bed, contributing to clogging, mud-balling, shortened filter runs and declining hydraulic performance.

At the same time, restrictions within the underdrain can cause pressure to build during backwashing. Depending on the design and condition of the filter, this can increase the risk of damaged nozzles, disturbed support gravel or more significant structural failure.

The media may show the problem. The underdrain may be causing it.

Why media replacement may not solve the problem

Replacing the media may appear to be the obvious response, particularly when the visible filter bed is clearly fouled. However, if the underlying restriction remains within the support gravel or underdrain, installing new media may leave the original cause of the performance decline untouched.

The replacement media may then be exposed to the same poor backwash conditions that contributed to the earlier problem.

Media condition should therefore be assessed rather than assumed. In some cases, media is genuinely exhausted or damaged and should be replaced. In others, fouled but serviceable media can be cleaned and restored.

Assess the complete filter first

The better starting point is to evaluate the filter as a complete asset:

  • assess the condition of the media;
  • investigate backwash flow and distribution;
  • identify restrictions within the support gravel and underdrain;
  • review backwash pressures and hydraulic behaviour;
  • restore components that remain serviceable;
  • replace only what genuinely needs replacing.
